Mussolini was born in Predappio, Italy. Early in life he held socialist views like of other families of this time. He became a journalist and he eventually became editor of Avanti!. Avanti! was the Italian voice of the socialist party. He was active in the socialist movement until it failed to support the Triple Alliance and quit the socialist party when they supported the Allies in WWI.
Mussolini reached the rank of corporal while serving in the Italian army. Because he was wounded, he returned to Milan and changed the II Poplo d’Italia to say that the Allies should fully support Italy’s demands at the Paris Peace Conference. After WWI ended, he verbally attacked Vittorio Orlancdo because he did not achieve Italy’s goals at Versailles. He helped to join many right wing parties together into the Fascist Party.
He founded fascism for Italy in Milan in March of 1919. His followers were mostly war veterans who wore black shirts and organized under military lines. The early fascist party was a combination of people who were anti-socialist, nationalist, productivist, elitist, and had a need for a strong leader. The fascist party reached 300,000 registered members in 1921 because of Mussolini's great speaking skills, a global economic crisis, lack of confidence in the traditional system, and the growing fear of socialism. Also the fascist party helped elect 35 members to parliament that year. He became the prime minister in 1922 after the “march of Rome” and 3 of civil war until he got rid of King Victor Emmanuel III. He became a dictator and had ruled as a puppet ruler of a fascist regime of Italy under the Germans. Ms. Glasserman explained in the interview, located under the "Home" link, that Mussolini was the first Fascist. She also explained that Mussolini's Italian fascism contained much believed racial superiority. He ruled until he was executed in July of 1943.
